Job Description

The VISTA will work in collaboration with another VISTA to introduce local energy as an economic opportunity for Delta County, and share lessons learned across the state of Colorado. Specifically, the VISTA will continue building the Solar in Schools High School Technical Training Program.

In 2015, the program was launched in two local high schools to introduce Delta County students to 21st-century clean energy career and trade opportunities. Through the Department of Energy’s Solar in Your Community Challenge, Solar Energy International (SEI) received seed money to expand the high school program to five regional high schools. The area’s rural electric cooperative, DMEA, aligned with the opportunity and agreed to fund the design and installation of five, 10 kW solar systems to aid as an educational tool for the participating high schools. In response, the VISTA team has introduced the program to regional schools, developed contracts to be executed with the schools and DMEA, and completed a request for proposal (RFP) process selecting partner installers to complete the school installations.

As an SEI VISTA, your role will be to continue the execution and expansion of the Solar in Schools High School Technical Training Program by:

1) Coordinating with local schools, teachers, and utilities to execute contracts, install solar systems, incorporate solar curriculum into high schools,  and include students in the installs of solar on their schools.  2) Developing a scalable model that can be utilized across the state of Colorado. 3) Building valuable grant research and writing skills by identifying possible funding opportunities for ongoing and future programs at SEI, and composing grant applications. 4) Educating the general public about renewable energy.

VISTA assignments

Solar Energy International has been working on community revitalization and economic diversification through a new local energy market in solar since 2014. The previous VISTAs kickstarted a local solar market through three rounds of Solarize campaigns and furthermore, they brought various solar resources to the county through partnerships and programs on the state and federal levels. Their efforts resulted in over $1.5 million dollars invested locally in solar, 60 solar systems installed in the community, and over 1,500 community members educated about solar energy.  Additionally VISTAs started a job training program for high school students to gain the skills to enter the growing solar workforce. Through their efforts 70 high school students have received SEI’s industry recognized Record of Completion, which can help them get an entry-level position in the solar industry. Through VISTAs’ efforts, the local utility has pledged $160,000 of their unclaimed capital credits to help grow and expand the high school program.
