Portland utility targets distributed energy, smart grid in net-zero plan
Follow @EngelsAngle</scrip Portland General Electric has outlined a path to net-zero emissions that relies on tripling clean energy assets and utilizing customer-sited distributed energy resources for grid resiliency. The Oregon utility shared plans Friday to reduce emissions by at least 80% by 2030, 90% by 2035, and to reach zero emissions by 2040. To reach the 2030 goal, PGE will eliminate coal from its portfolio and approximately 1,500 – 2,000 MW of clean and renewable resources an [...]

Slovenian utility installing solar plant at 136-MW Zlatoličje hydroelectric plant
Slovenia’s Dravske elektrarne Maribor, which operates as part of the HSE Group, announced it is beginning construction of segment five of the Zlatoličje solar power plant on the left bank of the discharge channel for the 136-MW Zlatoličje hydroelectric plant. DEM said this arrangement will add value to the country’s largest hydroelectric power plant while gaining gigawatt-hours of electricity for the country from a renewable source. Segment five of the Zlatoličje solar power plant w [...]

MISO capacity price fizzles, but opportunities for standalone storage lie with utility resource plans
MISO planning resource auction prices for the 2021 planning year did not live up to their expectations from 2020 auction results. In the 2020 auction, the Michigan zone cleared at a cost of new entry of $250-per-MW-day. But in the latest auction results from April, MISO capacity prices were mostly in the $5-per-MW-day range, and in some South zones, they were at $0.00. These capacity prices are hardly incentivizing either renewable energy developers such as solar or energy storage developers. Be [...]

Xcel celebrates milestone as utility is now halfway to 100% carbon free electricity
For the second year in a row, Xcel Energy has hit a significant milestone in its quest to deliver 100% carbon-free electricity to customers by 2050. Xcel reported that it broke its own record for a single-year drop in emissions in 2020, cutting carbon emissions company-wide by approximately six million tons, a 12% reduction over 2019 levels. That’s equivalent to taking nearly 1.2 million cars off the road for a year. In 2019, Xcel Energy achieved a 10% reduction over the previous year. S [...]

How Blockchain Is Threatening to Kill the Traditional Utility
If utilities think rooftop solar panels and batteries are bad for business, blockchain should scare the bejeezus out of them. That’s because in addition to helping more people slap panels on their rooftops — which eats into power sales and taxes grids — the distributed, digital ledger that’s proliferated across industries can also be used to trade electricity without a utility even knowing it. [...]

Stranded Utility Renewables — A Competitive Challenge for Early Adopters
Figures for the deployment of utility-scale renewable energy projects in the U.S. over the past decade are truly breathtaking. Installed utility-scale wind power capacity in the U.S. has increased nearly sevenfold since 2007, reaching a cumulative level of more than 80,000 MW in 2016. Deployment of utility-scale solar has been even more impressive, reaching a cumulative level of more than 10,000 MW in 2016 from less than 160 MW in 2007. [...]

PV Plant Repowering, the Utility 50-Year Systems Model
There are two basic types of solar PV plant repowering. The first is for existing or distressed plants. The second is for extending the life of new plants at the end of their initial design life, which is projected at about 20 to 25 years. So as we concentrate on new plant repowering, what is the difference? [...]

Lessons from Negotiations with the Utility
COSEIA Executive Director Rebecca Cantwell published an Op Ed piece in Solar Industry Magazine (January 2017) describing her experiences negotiating a complex settlement agreement with Xcel Energy last year. The settlement resolved issues from Xcel’s virtual barrage of PUC filings in 2016. We republish it here for your convenience: “As executive director of the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association, I spent much of my summer in corporate conference rooms at the headquarters [...]

New Utility Program Helps Customers Go Off-Grid
It seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? If utilities are in the business of selling kilowatt-hours, then why would it make sense for them to help customers produce enough of their own kilowatt-hours that they don’t need to buy them from the utility anymore? Burlington, VT-based Green Mountain Power is testing a new program that it hopes will result in dollar and carbon-emission savings for both customers and itself. It’s Off-Grid package includes an energy efficiency audit in partnership wi [...]
